TMJ Massage Therapy Do you suffer from unresolved toothache, facial or jaw pain, headaches, migraines, ear discomfort, or clicking and popping in your jaw? These symptoms may be related to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ Disorder or TMD) — a condition affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. While there are several approaches to managing TMJ pain, massage therapy is one of the most gentle, non-invasive, and effective options for long-term relief. How Massage Helps TMJ massage focuses on releasing tension in the soft tissues (muscles) around the jaw, neck, and shoulders. By addressing trigger points and restoring muscle balance, massage can reduce pain, improve mobility, and ease symptoms associated with TMJ dysfunction. What is the TMJ? The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects your jawbone (mandible) to your skull (temporal bone), located just in front of your ear. This joint and its associated muscles allow you to talk, eat, yawn, laugh, and express yourself. When the joint or surrounding muscles become irritated or strained, it can lead to Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) — resulting in pain, restricted movement, or clicking and popping noises when the jaw moves. Common TMJ Symptoms Include: • pain around your jaw, ear and temple • clicking, popping or grinding noises when you move your jaw • a headache around your temples or tinnitus • difficulty opening your mouth fully • your jaw locking when you open your mouth • The pain may be worse when chewing and when you feel stressed. • TMD can also stop you getting a good night's sleep. • difficulty opening your mouth fully or jaw locking • Teeth grinding (Bruxism) or worn teeth • The pain may be worse when chewing and when you feel stressed. • TMD can also stop you from sleeping Massage Treatment After assessing your jaw and neck, your therapist will focus on two key areas: 1. Neck and Shoulder Muscles – to release tension that can contribute to jaw pain. 2. Jaw Muscles (Muscles of Mastication) – using gentle external and intraoral techniques to relax the tissues directly around and affecting the TMJ. After your first treatment you will feel a difference but due to the chronic nature of this condition, ongoing treatment is required for a minimum 6 weeks. A course of treatments helps to address the underlying causes of your symptoms, whether they stem from injury, muscle strain, stress or habits such as clenching or grinding.
